About Barsey;

Barsey or Varsey is a small town in Sikkim. Located at an altitude of 10,000ft, Barsey is renowned for its Rhododendron Sanctuary. The sanctuary falls in the West Sikkim district and can be accessible by road via Hilley,Okhrey from Geyzing. If you want to try trekking in India,it would be an amazing idea to proceed up (4 kms) the hill from Hilley. The sanctuary falls in the Singalila range, and is a startingpoint to Singalila Ridge trek route. Lying at an elevation of 2900 mt. and has motorable road access up to Hilley. An easy 4 km trek from there takes one up to the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. One can also trek to Sandakhphu or Santakpur- Phalut from Barsey. The Sanctuary boast of over 40 variety of Rhododendron and during fullbloom , the whole sanctuary looks colorful.

1.Visit Okhrey.

How to reach

 Okhrey can be reached from Siliguri with a 6-7 hrs drive covering 140 kms via Teesta, Jorethang. Distancefrom Gangtok is 160 kms. One can avail shared Jeep service from Jorethang Jeep Stand (Opp. Payel Cinema, Siliguri), so, take a auto to Payel Cinema, from there, you can avail shared jeep to Jorethang, which is available at regular interval till noon. From Jorethang, one can get shared Jeep till Okhrey /Hilley till afternoon.

By Air

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport, which is situated just outside the town of Siliguri. The place is well connected and it receives international flights as well.

By Train:

The New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP) is the most know Railway Station nearby. It takes around 6 to 7 hours from NJP to reach Okhrey. The station is well connected to places such as Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Dibrugarh. Taxis are available at the station as well.

2. Set out for Hilley the next morning ,only 14 kms far from Okhrey,then gear up your muscles for a 4 km Nature trek to Barsey,laden with dazzling Rhodendrons ,floras and faunas.Enjoy the night s at Barsey where you can enjoy a spectacular view of Mt Kanchenjunga.You can set out for Dentam or Sandhakphu trek the next day from Barsey.
